The Catoosa County Schools Child Nutrition Program is not just a "filling station". It is an integral part of the educational system. The Child Nutrition Coordinator, as well as school cafeteria managers and their staffs see mealtime as an opportunity to integrate nutritious, well-balanced, low-cost meals with educational objectives. All cafeteria managers take classes in nutrition, quantity food preparation, management, food safety, and sanitation. Each cafeteria employee receives specialized training in food production and service.

Students learn what constitutes a well-balanced meal by observing the many selections offered each day. Menus are planned according to the new meal regulations passed by Congress in the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new guidelines include a choice of entrees, fruits, vegetables, grain, and milk. A good resource for parents and children alike can be found at USDA's MyPlate website. Breakfast is comprised of three food components to be offered to all students:

• Fruits (or vegetables as substitute)
• Grains (with optional meat/meat alternate items allowed)
• Fluid milk

Our schools offer at least four food items from the three required food components (grains, fruits, fluid milk) in at least the daily minimum amounts. Students must select three food items, including at least ½ cup of fruits, to have a reimbursable breakfast.

Lunch is comprised of five groups to be offered to all students:

• Fruits
• Vegetables
• Grains
• Meat/meat alternate
• Fluid milk

Our schools offer food items from the five required food components, in at least the daily minimum amounts. Students must select at least three different food components, including at least ½ cup of fruits or vegetables, to have a reimbursable lunch.

Lunch and breakfast menus are planned using the grade groups K–5, 6–8, and 9–12. Specific amounts and average calorie levels are used to create menus, depending on the grade groups.

If a meal does not meet component requirements, it will be charged as a la carte items, and will not meet free or reduced meal qualifications.

This written notice must be provided to you before you enroll in the program or receive services from the program, unless the nature of the service provided, or exigent circumstances make it impractical to provide such notice before we provide the actual service.  In such an instance, this notice must be provided to you at the earliest available opportunity.
